Lead (Leed), once home to prospectors and fortune-seekers, is now a haven for history buffs, outdoor enthusiasts and scientists! This educational and fun package includes a one -hour surface tour of this historic mountain town and to the Homestake Gold Mine’s underground and surface operations, now the Sanford National Underground Science Lab. You'll learn about how geology shaped the community with the discovery of gold, the ethnic neighborhood and the story of the new underground science lab at Homestake. The tour of the Mining Museum is a closer look at Lead’s mining history in an underground simulated tour.
Your tour continues on horseback where you'll visit an historic stampmill site and learn about the geology of the region. This mountain town is a trail head for the 110-mile Mickelson Trail, once a Burlington Northern railhead, now a hiking and biking trail that meanders through six quaint Black Hills communities and seasonal snowmobile trail. Blue ribbon trout streams and four golf courses are located minutes away.
